Strawberry Gelato

The end of summer. Fresh strawberries. A local farm.  Eggs, cream, milk, sugar.  The beginning of a new school year.  My kids. These are a few of my favorite things.  I thought maybe making some fresh strawberry gelato from the strawberries we picked up at the farm down the street could be a new family favorite tradition to mark the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year.  And so this year I surprised the kids when they got home from their first day with this little treat. ... Egg and Avocado Toast

Egg and Avocado Toast.  It doesn't get any simpler than that.  It's like the perfect little black dress. It can be dressed down and casual for every day events like breakfast at home for one or dressed up with a few accessories for a special occasion like a bridal shower or luncheon for twenty. Basic Version So lets talk options. I decided to use hard boiled eggs because they are an easy do ahead step and they slice beautifully.  Plus, who wants to stand there and make eggs twenty differ... Citrus Creme Brulee

Creme Brulee is an all-time favorite dessert of....well almost everybody.  There is just something about that thin, crunchy layer of caramelized sugar as it cracks beneath the weight of your spoon and that smooth, creamy custard that lies just beneath.  I am so hungry just thinking about taking that first delectable bite! This Citrus Creme Brulee version is from my cookbook - The Savory Gourmet.  I did not do a step by step version of this when I first created it but the full recipe is ... Continue Reading

Father’s Day Ice Cream Sundae

The grand finale of my Father's Day menu starring all things bourbon, bacon and beer is this ice cream sundae topped with the brown sugar and bourbon glazed bacon and the whiskey caramel sauce.  I started with just good old French Vanilla ice cream....piled high in the bowl. Then I sprinkled the top with a bit of crumbled bacon and a big old piece on the side for good measure. From there I  added a little bit of pizzelle - which is just an Italian wafer- to the sundae to give it more ... Continue Reading

Brown Sugar and Bourbon Glazed Bacon

Part of my Father's Day menu is this mouth watering and super simple Brown Sugar and Bourbon Glazed Bacon.  It contains all the necessary elements (sweet, salty and little back-of-the-mouth tang from the Bourbon).  And it's the perfect accompaniment for any brunch but particularly a Father's Day brunch that features all things bourbon, bacon and beer.  I bet you know a dad out there who will love this amped up version of bacon!  And if you aren't sure of the bourbon part (or if you want to ... Pine Nut Crusted Goat Cheese Salad with Cara Cara Orange Vinaigrette

Pine nut crusted goat cheese?  "I don't know...."  Is that what you are thinking?   Admit it.  Well I had my doubts too when I came up with the idea but trust me it just works.  The breadcrumb and toasted pine nut mixture is crunchy and has that distinct pine nut flavor to it that we all love in pesto.  It's just like sprinkling pine nuts on your salad only this time it's right on your cheese.  Paired with a bright, citrus vinaigrette this goat cheese salad makes a terrific starter, ... Challah Bread Egg Toast

This ooey, gooey Challah Bread Egg Toast (loaded with lots of cheese and veggies) is the ultimate breakfast sandwich for any occasion.  It's sumptuous, full of flavor and texture, and makes an impressive presentation on any brunch table.  I love using Challah bread for it's slightly sweet outside and spongy, delicate texture but you could use brioche or even a ciabatta bread if you can't find Challah.  Challah is a Jewish traditional ceremonial bread but it's readily available in most ... Fresh Mango Honey Cake

This Fresh Mango Honey Cake recipe started for me with a lonely can of sweetened condensed milk leftover in my pantry that I wanted to get rid of.  That, and I bought a six-pack of mangos at Costco and they all ripened at once (as they tend to do).  From those two ingredients this yummy cake developed from concept to fork.  Ha-ha. Okay well....I thought that was funny.  Maybe humor is not best suit.  I'll stick to cooking. Anyway, as I was pondering what might make a nice sweet ... Continue Reading

Prosciutto Wrapped Chicken with Creamy Leeks

It might not quite be corned beef and hash but this prosciutto wrapped chicken with creamy leeks topped with fresh green chives could be a new alternative for St. Patty's Day...or any weeknight for that matter.  Just what that sneaky leprechaun ordered!  Things are changing and it's fun to start new traditions along with the tried and true...like green beer. The crispy, salty prosciutto gives the chicken a nice texture and flavor but my favorite part is the creamy leeks because that's ... Continue Reading
