Strawberry Gelato

The end of summer. Fresh strawberries. A local farm.  Eggs, cream, milk, sugar.  The beginning of a new school year.  My kids. These are a few of my favorite things.  I thought maybe making some fresh strawberry gelato from the strawberries we picked up at the farm down the street could be a new family favorite tradition to mark the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year.  And so this year I surprised the kids when they got home from their first day with this little treat. ... Citrus Creme Brulee

Creme Brulee is an all-time favorite dessert of....well almost everybody.  There is just something about that thin, crunchy layer of caramelized sugar as it cracks beneath the weight of your spoon and that smooth, creamy custard that lies just beneath.  I am so hungry just thinking about taking that first delectable bite! This Citrus Creme Brulee version is from my cookbook - The Savory Gourmet.  I did not do a step by step version of this when I first created it but the full recipe is ... Continue Reading

Summer Fruit Puff Pastry with Mascarpone Whip Cream and Peach Glaze

Oh the sweetness of summer fruit....there is nothing like a fresh picked raspberry.  Or a peach straight from the tree.  Or a buck of cherries that came from the cherry tree in the backyard so perfect with their bright red skin.  This puff pastry dessert is a celebration of all that delicious summer fruit in season.  I used Ranier cherries, fresh raspberries, and fresh peaches but you can use whatever you have on hand that you like.  Blackberries, blueberries, strawberries....you can't go ... Father’s Day Ice Cream Sundae

The grand finale of my Father's Day menu starring all things bourbon, bacon and beer is this ice cream sundae topped with the brown sugar and bourbon glazed bacon and the whiskey caramel sauce.  I started with just good old French Vanilla ice cream....piled high in the bowl. Then I sprinkled the top with a bit of crumbled bacon and a big old piece on the side for good measure. From there I  added a little bit of pizzelle - which is just an Italian wafer- to the sundae to give it more ... Continue Reading

Whiskey Caramel Sauce

Father's Day, or any occasion really (like Tuesday), is just better with a little whiskey caramel sauce to drizzle on top of your ice cream, on top of brownies, over fresh fruit, or to lick right off the spoon.  Not to mention packaged in a glass jar it also makes a great hostess gift or a little bonus Father's Day gift.  I packaged the whiskey sauce with a bottle of beer and a little glass jar of the same whiskey that I used in the sauce.  It's a trio that most any dad would love! ... Fresh Mango Honey Cake

This Fresh Mango Honey Cake recipe started for me with a lonely can of sweetened condensed milk leftover in my pantry that I wanted to get rid of.  That, and I bought a six-pack of mangos at Costco and they all ripened at once (as they tend to do).  From those two ingredients this yummy cake developed from concept to fork.  Ha-ha. Okay well....I thought that was funny.  Maybe humor is not best suit.  I'll stick to cooking. Anyway, as I was pondering what might make a nice sweet ... Continue Reading

Pumpkin Mini-Bundt Cakes with Maple Glaze

My very discerning sweets taste testers absolutely loved these pumpkin mini-bundt cakes with maple glaze.  I did too, I must admit.  The test batch seemed to disappear at an alarming speed.  My favorite part about it was how moist the cakes turned out.  Really, truly.  And then all that yummy maple glaze that kind of pooled over the little dip in the bundt cake and drizzled all around the sides.  Yum!  Might be time for another batch... Here's the lowdown on the ingredients I used and ... Continue Reading

No-Bake Peanut Butter and Honey Oat Bars

Nothing reminds me of home and being a kid more than a peanut butter and honey sandwich.  I LOVED them growing up.  So as part of my segment for KCRA on Dorm Room Dishes I decided to come with an easy, no-bake treat that had the flavors of a peanut butter and honey sandwich AND that could be made in the microwave.  Perfect for a college dorm room,  right? Now I'm not normally a microwave kind of cook unless it's reheating something but I have to say these really turned out delicious!  ... Continue Reading

Salted Peanut Brittle Peanut Butter Cookies

As a kid Peanut Butter cookies were always a favorite for me.  Maybe because I grew up eating so many peanut butter and honey sandwiches...I don't know.   And still peanut butter is one of those things I've continued to crave even as I've grown well into adulthood.  It brings me back to childhood and is just soooo satisfying.  So when I was thinking of what kind of sweet I'd like to bring along on my Mother's Day Picnic peanut butter cookies immediately came to mind.  But to satisfy the ... Banana Muffins with Chocolate Ganache

I had two lonely overripe bananas on the counter and they inspired me to make them into something better.  I decided to do the mini-muffins for this recipe but you could easily adapt it to regular sized muffins and just cook them a couple of minutes longer.  These bite-sized treats are a really delicious after school or after soccer/baseball kind of snack or can just as easily make their way to a lovely brunch table.  The added bit of ganache might seem fancy ...
