Back To School Party
Why not kick off the school season the way we do the summer with a back to school party to get the kids excited? It doesn’t have to be big. Just your kids and one or two friends that maybe they haven’t seen over the summer or a new friend who may be in your class next year! The more important thing is to involve your kids and make it fun and easy by serving a few kid-friendly favorites and letting them help. I grabbed a roll of white wrapping paper and let them make the sign, which became the centerpiece for the table.
While they were busy doing that (hours of entertainment with only a few small outbreaks of arguments) I was busy in the kitchen. I decided to make Mac-N- Cheese Bites, Kid Friendly BBQ Chicken Skewers, Fruit Skewers, Turkey and Cheese Sandwiches, Apples with caramel, and Dirt-N-Worms. All classics. But to make it more festive and fun I went to Target and Michaels ahead of time and found some cute items to serve the food in and to decorate the table with. The apple cutter, which is key for cutting out the sandwiches into the shapes of little apples, I got online at Amazon and it was the 3 inch not the 4 inch. The 3 inch will make 2 mini sandwiches from one whole sandwich with not a lot of waste. And then you can use the apple cookie cutter to make cookies for Teach Appreciation Week later in the year. Or Snickerdoodles for me. Not sure yet which.
I started by making the Kid Friendly BBQ Chicken skewers and then the macaroni and cheese bites. The fruit was just and easy assembly and serve, no cooking required. Same with the dirt and worms. And to keep it super easy I used a store bought caramel sauce for the apples and caramel. The sandwiches were just two pieces of bread and a piece of ham or turkey and a slice of cheese. That’s it! I served the skewers and pencil cups and tied a name tag to each cup so the kids could have a fun takeaway that they can use for school. I also found little apple tags online on Amazon and stuck those in the apples.
The kids were so happy and ate everything – exclaiming how good sandwiches are in the shape of apples (like they taste any different). Without a doubt this party was a hit and one I’d do again. School…..here we come!
